The train has arrived.

Yet this locomotive doesn’t carry coal. It carries artists.

For three weeks, the Station to Station train will travel across the country, making nine stops along the way. Organized by artist Doug Aitken, this public art project (made possible by Levi’s) will connect leading figures, underground creators and curious spectators from the worlds of art, music, food, literature and film. The train will make two stops in the Midwest.

Chicago

Chicago’s Beaux Arts-style Union Station serves as the backdrop for the sounds of Mavis Staples, Theaster Gates’ Black Monks of Mississippi, Thurston Moore and John Moloney/Caught on Tape, No Age and White Mystery (plus more). The building, originally designed by famed architect Daniel Burnham, will also play host to an array of slow food producers and artists, such as Urs Fischer, Kenneth Anger, Ernesto Neto, Carsten Höller and Liz Glynn.

Minneapolis/St. Paul

The train will make its second Midwest stop at the Union Depot, in St. Paul, Minn. Here, the cross-country traveling art project will give you the sounds of Patti Smith, Eleanor Friedberger, No Age and White Mystery (among others). Slow food producers will be on hand to keep you full through a night of art, including a live Happening from Fritz Haeg and BodyCartography Project, and nomadic sculptures from Urs Fischer, Kenneth Anger, Ernesto Neto, Carsten Höller and Liz Glynn.
